Sphinx Ghost Story

It was dangerous to play with ka spirits, but the Musician didn’t know.  She came to him one night, when he was playing his harp by himself, serenading the stars.  He heard her jewelries twinkle, and kept playing, until she danced in front of him.  He finished the song, letting the last notes trail off, and she stopped to gaze at him.

"I've been dancing for a long time," she said with a twinkle in her eyes.  "No one's called me back with his music before." Her red eyes bore into his.

His wandering life had never given him time to take a mate, but suddenly the Musician found himself falling in love.  Each night he would play, and each night she would materialize and dance with his music, and slowly, gently, they bonded, connected by the music of their passion. On their last night she kissed him, for the first time, and whispered, "Your music is life itself."  She faded away, like every night, but with a finality that confused him.

She never came again after that, but he kept playing, the music reminding him of a love that he knew but had somehow lost.  He practiced hard to master the music, hoping one day she would come back to him.  One night, he saw something in the darkness.  The cub ran into his arms, purring, and in amazement he saw that she was both him and her.  Somehow, she was both his child and his love.

She looked up at him and for a moment those piercing eyes gazed at him, and he smiled.
